  12.     BOSTON, MA -- NETWORLD -- January 11, 1993 -- To help 
  13. network managers and service professionals better manage and 
  14. maintain their NetWare networks, Novell Inc. today announced 
  15. LANalyzer for Windows v2.0, a next-generation network 
  16. analysis product that includes both automatic problem 
  17. diagnostic capabilities and extensive interactive network 
  18. troubleshooting training.  Version 2.0 also supports 4- and 
  19. 16-Mbps token ring topologies, decodes TCP/IP traffic, and 
  20. monitors IPX and AppleTalk routers.

  22.     LANalyzer for Windows, previously called LANalyzer for 
  23. NetWare, is an affordable, easy-to-use monitoring and 
  24. troubleshooting system designed to manage the interaction 
  25. among networked devices.  The only network analyzer running 
  26. under Windows, this release expands the product's 
  27. capabilities by including the NetWare Expert, an intelligent 
  28. troubleshooting system that automates analysis functions 
  29. while training users in the fundamentals of network 
  30. diagnostics.

  32.     "Even small networks are inherently complex because of the 
  33. virtually limitless number of possible interactions among the 
  34. nodes," said Navindra Jain, vice president and general 
  35. manager of Novell's Network Management and Internetworking 
  36. Products Division.  "The goal of this product is simple:  
  37. give all NetWare troubleshooters, regardless of their 
  38. expertise, a tool that's easy to understand and use at a 
  39. competitive price."

  41.     HEL, Inc., a Pennsylvania-based integrator and service 
  42. provider, served as a beta site for LANalyzer for Windows 
  43. v2.0.  "This generation of LANalyzer for Windows is amazing," 
  44. said Howard Lubert, president of HEL, Inc. and vice chairman 
  45. of the international board of LANDA (Local Area Network 
  46. Dealers' Association).  "Not only does it now support token 
  47. ring LANs, the built-in expert system makes it possible for 
  48. anyone who can install the software on their LAN to quickly 
  49. become a NetWare guru."

  52. KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  54.     Novell's LANalyzer for Windows is designed to make complex 
  55. network analysis and management functions as easy to 
  56. understand and use as possible.  Users navigate the product 
  57. using the familiar Windows mouse-driven system.  The 
  58. product's initial interface is an automotive "dashboard," 
  59. which displays network statistics on three circular gauges 
  60. with needles that move to indicate levels of key network 
  61. activity, including traffic rates, bandwidth utilization and 
  62. errors.  LANalyzer for Windows detects common problems and 
  63. alerts users to network anomalies through a system of warning 
  64. lights, audible alarms and text descriptions of error 
  65. conditions.  LANalyzer for Windows v2.0 offers the following 
  66. features and functions:

  68. -o-  NetWare Expert -- Unique to LANalyzer for Windows, 
  69. NetWare Expert helps users understand the complex information 
  70. the product generates.  It automatically discovers and 
  71. diagnoses more than 20 common network problems and offers 
  72. users suggestions on how to fix those problems.

  74.     NetWare Expert also includes an eight-hour animated computer-
  75. based training course on network analysis.  Used as an 
  76. adaptive learning tool, NetWare Expert quizzes users on their 
  77. knowledge of token ring and Ethernet, identifies their 
  78. strengths and trains them on their weaknesses.  NetWare 
  79. Expert is also a reference tool.  As a reference tool, users 
  80. can select a topic, such as "CRC errors," and NetWare Expert 
  81. explains the event, lists its symptoms and causes, and 
  82. suggests solutions.

  84. -o-  Automatic problem diagnosis -- NetWare Expert lets users 
  85. obtain information about any specific network alarm by 
  86. double-clicking on the appropriate entry in the event log.  
  87. NetWare Expert lists symptoms associated with a particular 
  88. alarm, and offers suggestions on how to correct the problem.

  90. -o-  Token ring and Ethernet support -- LANalyzer for Windows 
  91. now supports the two most widely used networking topologies, 
  92. token ring and Ethernet.  LANalyzer for Windows includes 
  93. routines to find and fix the most common token ring problems, 
  94. including failing interface cards, overloaded stations and 
  95. failing multi-station access units (MSAUs).

  97. -o-  TCP/IP support -- LANalyzer for Windows includes decodes 
  98. for the TCP/IP protocol suite.  This extends the product's 
  99. decoding capabilities beyond the NetWare Lite, NetWare 2.x, 
  100. NetWare 3.x, and AppleTalk Phase 1 and 2 decodes that shipped 
  101. with the 1.0 version.

  103. -o-  IPX and AppleTalk router monitoring -- Release 2.0 adds 
  104. a warning light that notifies users of an IPX or AppleTalk 
  105. Phase 1 or 2 router failure.

  107. -o-  Server monitoring -- LANalyzer for Windows continuously 
  108. monitors NetWare and AppleTalk file and print servers.

  110. -o-  Additional sources of networking information -- 
  111. LANalyzer for Windows includes a VHS and PAL format video 
  112. tape that describes six of the most common networking 
  113. problems and tells users how to identify and fix them.  The 
  114. product also includes a book on network analysis that 
  115. incorporates Novell's collective experience on networking and 
  116. troubleshooting.

  118. -o-  Application launcher -- LANalyzer for Windows can 
  119. execute a user-defined application when an alarm is 
  120. generated.  For example, in the event of a critical network 
  121. error condition, such as an overloaded server, LANalyzer for 
  122. Windows can trigger an application that notifies the 
  123. technician responsible for maintaining that server.

  125. -o-  Decode software development kit -- The LANalyzer for 
  126. Windows SDK lets developers write their own decodes for 
  127. protocols not supported in this product.

  130. PRICING, AVAILABILITY AND UPGRADE

  132.     Novell's LANalyzer for Windows, a complete network 
  133. monitoring and analysis system for NetWare networks, will be 
  134. available through Novell distribution channels at the end of 
  135. January 1993.  The suggested list price is US$1,495.  
  136. LANalyzer for Windows v1.0 users can upgrade to v2.0 for 
  137. US$500.  The upgrade offer begins in February 1993 and will 
  138. continue for six months.

  156. extensive documentation.  Versions for Ethernet or token ring 
  157. (4- and 16-Mbps) topologies list for US$12,500.  A combined
